Rise in migrant deaths as 19 bodies found along Arizona border last month

In Pima County, Arizona, the remains of 19 migrants, including children, were recently discovered along the Arizona-Mexico border, marking the highest monthly death toll in the region since 2024. This brings the total number of migrant remains found this year to 73, 14 more than the same period last year. Experts and immigration advocates attribute this surge to US policy, including the recent blocking of asylum seekers and the closure of legal ports of entry.

Despite extreme temperatures caused by global warming and the threat of arrest by ICE, migrants continue to undertake the dangerous journey through Mexico.

Octavio Fuentes, executive director of the non-profit Humane Borders organization, points out that the current administration has effectively closed legal entry points, making illegal entry nearly impossible. Humane Borders has documented 4,505 migrant deaths in the Arizona desert over the past 25 years, an average of one every other day. The most common causes of death are dehydration and exposure, but hypothermia and blunt force trauma also contribute to fatalities.

Brad Jones, a board member from Humane Borders and a professor at the University of California, Davis, notes that the recent data indicates a high number of "contemporaneous" deaths, meaning they occurred recently rather than being newly discovered remains. He emphasizes that scavengers and animals often destroy evidence, making it difficult to determine the true number of migrant deaths along the southern US border.

Amelia Frank-Vitale, an anthropology professor at Princeton University, explores why people risk death migrating to the US. She recounts meeting a pregnant woman in Honduras who was preparing to migrate despite the Trump administration's anti-immigrant measures. Despite these efforts, the US has historically failed to address the instability it has created in other countries.

Fuentes criticizes US policies that have sown chaos abroad, leading desperate individuals to seek alternative routes to the US. The Trump administration's policies, such as Operation Gatekeeper and the CBP One app, have further discouraged migrants from entering legally. Despite these measures, the journey continues, leading to a higher number of lethal deaths in the Arizona desert, akin to a plane crash scenario.
