Quota set for visitors to popular Sai Kung coastal trail in first for Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has announced a new quota system for visitors to the Po Pin Chau section of the High Island Geo Trail, marking the city's first countryside crowd-control measures. The quota will limit access to 2,000 people per day, requiring real-name registration and real-time booking through the Klook platform.

The quota will be enforced during peak periods, including the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival weekend and the upcoming "golden week" from September 5-20. Department director Mickey Lai explained that the quota aims to prevent sudden influxes of visitors, excessive wear and tear on the narrow trail, and environmental damage. Despite charging no fees initially, authorities reserve the right to enforce penalties for those failing to appear.

Lai emphasized that the system is designed to protect the environment and enhance visitor experience. Previously, large amounts of trash and irresponsible behavior during peak seasons led to controversy and calls for better ecotourism management. Visitors must register with their real names and present identification, with staff checking during trail entry.

While walk-ins are allowed if quotas are not filled, authorities plan to station staff along the trail to ensure environmental protection.
