OpenAI cuts developer pricing for frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20%

OpenAI has announced a significant price reduction of over 20% for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model, effective for the next three months. The cuts are being implemented across eligible plans for OpenAI's application programming interface (API), ChatGPT Work product, and its coding tool Codex, according to the company's statement. The pricing changes only impact the standard short-context use, with the model now priced at $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens, a decrease from previous rates of $5 and $30, respectively.

This move comes amid intensifying competition from AI giants Anthropic and Chinese AI models. Just last month, OpenAI also lowered prices for its smaller models, cutting costs by 20% for the mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model and by 80% for the lower-cost Luna model.
