Nigerian students get free Google AI Plus for 1 year

Google has announced a free Google AI Plus subscription for Nigerian students for an entire year. This offer, known as the Gemini Student Offer, is valued at N92,400 per student and is available to those aged 18 or older enrolled in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education. The offer includes enhanced usage limits, access to Gemini Omni, Gemini Live for real-time conversations, Deep Research for academic work, custom practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads, and 400 GB of cloud storage. Nigeria is among 27 Sub-Saharan African countries where the offer is presently active.

Olumide Balogun, Google's Director for West and East Africa, emphasized the significance of AI in the region's young, entrepreneurial population. He stated that providing 12 months of free Google AI Plus aims to eliminate financial barriers, enabling students to master complex subjects, gain essential digital skills, and compete confidently in the global economy.

The offer is part of Google's commitment to 'Guided Learning,' which functions like a patient tutor, offering hints and guiding questions instead of direct answers. According to a Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 West African students, those utilizing Guided Learning achieved learning progress equivalent to 1.2 to 1.7 years in just eight weeks.

Over 90% of their interactions with the AI focused on understanding concepts, with direct solutions provided in only 2% of cases.

Teachers retain control through Google Classroom, where they can enforce Guided Learning mode, ensuring students receive guidance without shortcuts. Student and classroom data are not utilized to train Google's AI models. Additionally, YouTube has incorporated study-focused safeguards such as Take a Break reminders, bedtime alerts, and limits on Shorts to minimize distractions during study hours.
