Nigerian students get free Google AI Plus for 1 year

Google is offering Nigerian students a year of its AI Plus plan for free, providing them access to advanced AI learning tools. The subscription costs ₦92,400 ($68.56) and includes features like Gemini Study Notebooks, Gemini Live, Deep Research, interactive 3D visualizations, and Google Lens Homework Helper. This initiative is Google's latest effort to bring its AI tools to education in Africa, following a similar offer in October 2025 to students in several African countries.

Google has also committed $2.1 million to five Nigerian organizations to accelerate AI skills and innovation. Olumide Balogun, Google's director for West & East Africa, emphasized that AI presents a significant opportunity for Nigeria, given its young and entrepreneurial population. To qualify for the free offer, students must verify their enrollment through SheerID, a data platform.

Renewals are possible for those who have claimed the offer in the previous academic year. Once activated, Google AI Plus provides students with higher usage limits on Gemini, access to more advanced AI features, unlimited file uploads, and 400 gigabytes of Google storage. Google's Guided Learning feature aims to help students understand topics rather than just providing answers, with studies showing promising results in improving learning outcomes.
