Neutrogena responds after handling of Hayden Panettiere deal draws scrutiny

U.S. cosmetics brand Neutrogena has faced criticism after it ended its partnership with the late actress Hayden Panettiere following her public discussion about mental health struggles. Panettiere collaborated with Neutrogena from 2005 to 2015, serving as a prominent spokesperson. In a statement on Thursday, the company acknowledged that Panettiere was a "valued member of the Neutrogena community" for over a decade and expressed its regret for not being supportive during her difficult time.

Panettiere alleged in a podcast interview that the company, which employs "morals clauses," terminated her contract due to her candid remarks about postpartum depression. A morals clause in a contract allows a party to terminate the agreement if the other party violates its moral and ethical standards. Panettiere claimed that she was unaware of the termination until it was communicated to her representative, and that she never received any further communication from the brand after it ended her decade-long relationship.

Neutrogena defended its decision, stating that Panettiere's courage in sharing her struggles inspired important conversations and awareness. The company also mentioned its commitment to supporting women's health, particularly in the area of postpartum depression. Panettiere, who shared a daughter, Kaya, with her ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, expressed her grief over not being the mother she wanted to be, emphasizing the importance of strong connections in family life.

Despite the circumstances, Panettiere maintained a close bond with her daughter. On Sunday, Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and manner of her death are currently under investigation.
