Nat'l Assembly speaker discusses parliamentary cooperation with U.S. ambassador

National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik met with U.S. Ambassador to Korea Michelle Steel on Friday to discuss enhancing parliamentary cooperation between the two nations. Cho expressed his appreciation for Steel's background in U.S. politics and her passion for Korea, stating he believes she will play a significant role in strengthening Korea-U.S. relations.

He emphasized his agreement with President Donald Trump's efforts to facilitate dialogue on the Korean Peninsula, a region fraught with strained relations and ongoing efforts to establish a stable peace regime. Cho expressed disappointment that the Korea-U.S. Parliamentarians Union, a parliamentary body established last year to foster exchanges between Seoul and Washington, currently lacks a counterpart within the U.S. Congress.

In response, Steel reassured Cho of the ongoing discussions aimed at further developing the alliance, noting the regular visits of Korean lawmakers to the U.S., and vice versa. She pledged her commitment to active support for strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries.
