Mumbai Water Stock Stays Strong At 94.27% As City's 7 Lakes Remain Well-Filled

Mumbai's water supply infrastructure is in robust condition, with the combined water storage in the city's seven lakes standing at an impressive 94.27 per cent of their total capacity as of early Friday morning, according to the latest update from the Mumbai Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This figure represents a slight reduction from the previous day's 94.29 per cent, but remains well above the critical threshold of 90 per cent, signifying continued good water management.

The data, sourced from the Hydraulic Engineer's Department within the BMC, reveals that the seven lakes are currently holding a combined total of 13,64,385 million litres of water, exceeding their collective capacity of 14,47,363 ML. Several reservoirs have reached full capacity, notably Modak Sagar, Vehar, and Tulsi, all at 100 per cent. Other key reservoirs such as Tansa and Middle Vaitarna are at 98.77 per cent and 94.03 per cent respectively, indicating a plentiful water supply despite the city's high demand.

The Hydraulic Engineer's Department is actively monitoring these reservoirs and dam operations through its Master Control Centre in Bhandup, with particular attention paid to dam gates and water release schedules to ensure stable reservoir levels. The recent heavy monsoon rains across the city's catchment areas have significantly bolstered the lakes' water levels, with Tansa and Modak Sagar in particular experiencing overflow, a welcome development after a period of lower storage.

While the high water stock offers Mumbai residents peace of mind regarding their water supply for the coming months, officials remain vigilant, closely tracking rainfall, inflows, and reservoir conditions as the monsoon season continues. This situation underscores the resilience of Mumbai's water infrastructure and the city's ability to maintain a stable water supply even during periods of heavy rainfall.
