Mumbai: BMC Passes Advanced Smart Turf Policy Resolution; Over 1,500 Private Turfs May Face New Rules

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently passed a resolution for a new 'Advanced Smart Turf Policy' to regulate the city's burgeoning number of private sporting turfs. The proposal, introduced by BJP corporator Tejinder Singh Tiwana, aims to bring these facilities under a formal civic framework as concerns have grown over late-night games, noise pollution, powerful floodlights, and the encroachment on open recreational spaces.

If enacted, the policy will require the use of the 'Khelo Mumbai' app for turf registration, bookings, permissions, and revenue transactions, eliminating cash dealings. Additionally, the policy suggests a ban on potentially hazardous rubber crumbs, mandates the use of eco-friendly alternatives, and requires roof nets at all turfs to prevent balls from entering adjoining residential areas.

The BMC plans to enforce norms on operating hours, noise pollution, floodlights, traffic, fire safety, and environmental compliance. Regular inspections will be part of the new framework. Once approved, the policy is expected to bring over 1,500 artificial turfs under a common regulatory system, enhancing the BMC's oversight of their operations, safety, and environmental impact.
