Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sworn in as Bangladesh's 23rd President

The Nigerian government expressed its congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. This marks a significant milestone in Bangladesh's democratic journey, as the country held its first contested presidential election in 35 years. Alamgir secured victory with 255 votes against 88 received by his opponent, retired Colonel Oli Ahmad.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed Nigeria's best wishes to Alamgir, the Government, and people of Bangladesh. The Nigerian government commended the peaceful conduct of Bangladesh’s electoral process and expressed confidence in Alamgir's leadership to promote national unity, stability, democratic governance, and sustainable development.

Nigeria emphasized its cordial relationship with Bangladesh, highlighting shared interests in sustainable development, economic growth, food and energy security, climate action, and multilateralism. Both nations look forward to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education, information and communication technology, healthcare, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Nigeria recognized Bangladesh’s constructive role in regional and international affairs and reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation through the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and other multilateral platforms.
