Mavs buy out Klay Thompson, who could join Heat after Doncic trade wrecked Dallas tenure

The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson have reached an agreement on a contract buyout, putting an end to Thompson's two-year stint with the team. Thompson’s departure comes on the heels of the shocking trade of Luka Doncic, which disrupted the previous season's high hopes of the Mavericks. Thompson, a five-time All-Star, is expected to sign with the Miami Heat, pending waivers, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The Mavericks, who missed the playoffs in both of Thompson's seasons, had hoped he would be a complementary addition to Doncic and Kyrie Irving. However, the Doncic trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in early 2025, followed by Irving’s ACL tear and subsequent injury, led to the demise of that trio. Anthony Davis, once a key player, was traded to the Washington Wizards right before the February trade deadline the following year.

Despite the setback, the Mavericks managed to secure the top pick in the draft lottery and selected freshman Cooper Flagg, who became Rookie of the Year. Flagg's arrival has given the Mavericks renewed hope for the future.
