Man gets jail, caning for abusing 6-year-old boy for 18 hours

In Singapore, a 31-year-old man was sentenced to nine years and 10 months in prison, along with eight canings, for abusing several young boys under his care in August. The man, who worked for a company that owned accommodation for foreign students, beat his youngest victim, a six-year-old boy, with a hanger more than 600 times. He also forced the boy to hold a push-up position for extended periods, made him sleep in the toilet and drink his own urine.

The boy suffered severe injuries, including to his ribs, lungs and kidneys, and was hospitalized for 46 days. The man also abused two older boys, aged 10 and 11. District Judge John Ng emphasized that the sentence sent a strong message against the abuse and ill treatment of young, vulnerable victims. The judge noted that the man's personal background of abuse at the hands of his alcoholic father and older brother was not an excuse for his cruel actions.

The judge cited a psychiatrist's report, stating that even if the allegations were true, they did not excuse the man's physical abuse of the children in his care. CCTV footage captured most of the man's actions, which were described as "depraved" and cruel. The man pleaded guilty to making a false declaration regarding hiring a domestic worker and was also responsible for managing the accommodation and teaching mathematics and English to the primary school students, despite lacking teaching or childcare qualifications.
