Malaysian-made VAR for badminton makes international debut

The Malaysian-made Reveal Lens system, akin to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) utilized in football and tennis, has made its international debut in badminton. The system, developed by Revealtek Solutions, was employed at the Singapore International Challenge, its first deployment outside Malaysia. Spanning from August 18 to August 23, the tournament saw the Reveal Lens used to swiftly review contentious line calls.

Nizam Mohamed, CEO of Revealtek Sdn Bhd, elucidated that while the Reveal Lens shares similarities with VAR, it surpasses it by providing a definitive decision based on computations rather than merely displaying a video replay. The system has already proven its mettle in local tournaments and has garnered interest from Vietnam and Indonesia. Furthermore, Nizam is discussing the prospect of the technology gaining global endorsement from continental confederations, aiming to establish it as a standard practice for the sport.

Beyond its review capabilities, Revealtek is also crafting an analytics module and a comprehensive line-calling system that could potentially replace the need for line judges in badminton matches. A demonstration of these advanced features is slated to take place in an upcoming tournament in Australia in October.
