Lagos explains delay in replacing BRT buses burnt during #EndSARS

The Lagos State Government has clarified the reason behind the delay in replacing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses burnt during the #EndSARS protests. Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat attributed the issue to the significant increase in the cost of acquiring new buses. When the buses were initially purchased, they cost about N80m each, but the price has now escalated to around N280m per bus.

This dramatic rise in costs has made it challenging for the state to replace all the vehicles destroyed during the protests. Hamzat explained that 200 BRT buses were burnt during the protests, and while the state had initially anticipated that some of its buses would need to be withdrawn from service after seven or eight years, it has not been able to replace all 200 buses. As a result, commuters are currently experiencing a shortage of BRT buses.
