Makueni County in Kenya is leveraging satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems (GIS) to optimize the construction and maintenance of rural roads. This innovative approach, a collaboration with Israeli-linked engineering firm AnyWay Solutions, aims to cut costs and improve the allocation of limited public resources.

By analyzing factors such as population distribution, health facilities, weather conditions, and terrain, the technology can pinpoint the most efficient locations for road construction and upgrades. County officials are optimistic that the data-driven system will help them make informed decisions before embarking on costly construction projects.

The pilot program, which will utilize satellite data, drones, and AI technologies, will focus on assessing the road network and determining where investment will yield the greatest impact. By prioritizing roads based on real-time information and community needs, Makueni County seeks to minimize expenses and respond swiftly to potential issues, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when flooding and poor drainage can severely damage rural roads.
