Karnataka Dalit woman found dead in well; 4 detained after family alleges rape, murder

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old Dalit woman from Hokrani village in Sirwar taluk of Karnataka’s Raichur district went missing after leaving her home to relieve herself. Her body was discovered in an open well the following morning. The woman's family reported her disappearance to the police, who found her body lying face down in the well. The victim had worked in the fields earlier in the day and returned home with her parents around 6 pm. She left home again around 7 pm, reportedly to use the toilet, but was not seen again.

The alleged perpetrators have been detained based on information provided by the woman's family. The four accused reportedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered the young woman before dumping her body in the well. The FIR was registered at the Sirwar police station and includes allegations of kidnapping, murder, gang rape, causing disappearance of evidence, and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Additionally, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015, is also applicable.

Raichur Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri confirmed the detention of the accused. Inspector-General of Police, Ballari Range, visited the village to review the investigation. Raichur Deputy Commissioner Poovitha S met with the victim's family, assuring them of strict action, safety measures, and compensation. The incident has led to protests from Dalit organizations, demanding swift action against the responsible parties.
