Japan-Based U.S. Aircraft Carrier Deployed to Middle East

The USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been on a long deployment marked by concerns over living conditions and morale. The George Washington is expected to relieve the Lincoln, which has been at sea for over 250 days without a significant port visit or return date for the 5,000 sailors on board.

Recent reports and accounts from families of crew members have raised alarm bells about food and water shortages, disrupted mail services, plumbing problems, low morale, and worsening mental health among the sailors. The wife of a sailor onboard the Lincoln told the Guardian that she has noticed a decline in her husband's morale and positivity over the past few months.

Photographs of his sometimes sparse meals have also left her worried about the sailors' nutrition. Despite the navy acknowledging that the Lincoln has among the lowest cases of mental health issues of its active aircraft carriers, the wife remains concerned about the toll of a long deployment without any port visits. A retired US navy captain, Carl Otis Schuster, emphasized the need to pay more attention to the "human element" of such deployments and warned of the repetitive nature of the problems emerging from these extended sea patrols.
