In the land of smiles, check who’s holding the dental tools

Bangkok, on August 21 — Thailand's reputation as the Land of Smiles may be at risk, as a recent crackdown by Thai authorities highlights the dangers of seeking dental or medical services from unlicensed practitioners. Thai police made arrests in Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Prakan, seizing over 1,000 pieces of medical and dental equipment. The Central Investigation Bureau's Consumer Protection Police Division conducted searches at five locations, collaborating with public health officials and other agencies.

Four individuals were charged with offering dental services without proper licenses, while a fifth suspect faced accusations of practicing medicine without authorization. The police seized a total of 1,058 items, valued at more than 330,000 baht (RM40,700), comprising 56 types of dental materials, medical equipment, and unregistered medicines.

Some of the illicit dental work was performed from converted homes and roadside premises, including the fitting of fashion braces and the creation of dentures and retainers. In Samut Sakhon's Krathum Baen district, a 30-year-old woman was apprehended for fitting fashion braces using a mouth retractor and dental etching solution, claiming she had self-taught these procedures through YouTube tutorials and self-practice. She allegedly earned more than 15,000 baht (RM1,850) monthly from this unlicensed work.

Elsewhere, a 61-year-old man was arrested for allegedly making dental impressions and dentures from his home, previously having worked at a dental laboratory. A 44-year-old former dental technician was accused of making retainers in her home. In Bangkok, a 56-year-old woman was arrested for making and repairing dentures at a roadside shop, where police seized over 500 resin dentures and dental tools.

The fifth suspect, a 26-year-old woman with a nursing degree, was caught administering an intravenous vitamin drip at a beauty clinic without a doctor's supervision, and unregistered medicines were seized from her as well.

All five suspects were charged with providing medical or dental services without the required licenses and were handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings.
