Hunt second in Diamond League 200m as White wins

Amy Hunt rounded off an exceptional week at the European Championships with a second-place finish in the 200m at the Diamond League in Lausanne. The British sprinter crossed the line in 22.32 seconds, narrowly behind Nigerian Favour Ofili in a photo finish. American Kayla White claimed the victory with a time of 22.18, while former world champion Shericka Jackson withdrew due to a leg injury and two-time Diamond League champion Brittany Brown failed to start.

Hunt entered the competition following a triumphant week at the European Championships, where she secured four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, women's 4x100m relay, and mixed 4x100m relay, making her the first athlete to achieve such a feat in a single European Championships edition.

Reflecting on her performance, Hunt expressed her delight, stating that it was "so much fun" and that she had expected to arrive at the meet more fatigued than she did. She revealed that her stiff muscles from the pre-meet yesterday had taken some time to loosen, but her strength managed to carry her throughout the race. Hunt emphasized her love for competition and performing in front of a crowd, crediting the electric atmosphere for lifting her spirits during this post-Europeans, high-pressure event.

The season's experiences have taught her that success doesn't always require perfection; she has witnessed firsthand that even amidst moments of despair, things can still turn out positively.

In contrast, British sprinter Zharnel Hughes failed to match his European silver medal performance from the previous week, finishing fifth in the men's 200m. Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo secured first place with a time of 19.87, followed by Commonwealth champion Sinesipho Dambile in second with a time of 19.98. Switzerland's recently crowned 800m European champion, Audrey Werro, demonstrated exceptional speed by winning the race on home soil in a meeting record time of 1 minute and 55.33 seconds.

Fellow British sprinter Keely Hodgkinson did not participate in Lausanne but is set to return in Zurich to compete against Werro and Broeders-Bol. The next Diamond League meeting will take place in Silesia, Poland, on Sunday 23 August, followed by Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday 27 August. The season will conclude in Brussels, Belgium, on the weekend of 4 and 5 September.
