Health ministry warns of increased nationwide dengue risk as cases rise

The Malaysian health ministry has issued a warning regarding a rising nationwide dengue risk as the number of cases continues to climb. As of August 15, 2026, there have been 58,079 dengue cases reported, marking a 56.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The ministry reported that 55 individuals had succumbed to dengue-related complications by the end of the 32nd epidemiological week of 2026.

While initial clusters of the disease were primarily observed in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya, the health ministry cautioned that the potential for dengue to spread across the entire country remains a concern due to upward trends in several other states. Factors contributing to the increased risk of dengue transmission include fluctuating weather patterns, with alternating periods of heavy rainfall and high temperatures creating ideal conditions for Aedes mosquito breeding.

Additionally, a significant factor is the presence of unattended water containers in and around residential areas, which serve as breeding grounds for these mosquitoes.

In response to the situation, the ministry urged the public to dedicate at least 10 minutes each week to inspect their homes and eliminate any potential mosquito breeding sites. It also emphasized the importance of personal protective measures against mosquito bites and advised individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they experience high fever or other symptoms of dengue.

The ministry stressed that combating dengue requires a collective effort from the entire society, as over 70% of Aedes mosquito breeding sites are still located in residential areas.
