Govt. working on additional subsidy scheme for polysilicon manufacturing: Official
The MNRE Secretary stated that India would require 30 GW of polysilicon manufacturing capacity addition to secure its energy needs and ensure manufacturing resilience.
The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is developing a new subsidy program to support the expansion of polysilicon manufacturing capacity in the country, according to Santosh Sarangi, Secretary at the ministry. Sarangi revealed the plan during a recent event. He emphasized that adding 30 gigawatts (GW) of polysilicon capacity by 2030 is crucial for ensuring energy security and manufacturing resilience.
Sarangi noted that establishing a polysilicon plant and metallurgical grade silicon costs around ₹850 crore per gigawatt. He explained that since the existing production-linked incentive scheme hasn't attracted significant capacity, a revised subsidy scheme is being devised to provide financial support to manufacturers. Currently, approximately 42 gigawatts of solar projects lack off-take agreements, including 18 GW of standalone solar projects and about 15 GW secured at premium prices.
