Govt plans new scheme to support domestic manufacturing of polysilicon

Polysilicon is used to make ingots, which are then processed into wafers and used to produce solar cells.

Govt plans new scheme to support domestic manufacturing of polysilicon

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is developing a new scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of polysilicon, a crucial component for solar modules, according to Santosh Kumar Sarangi, secretary of the ministry. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit 2026, Sarangi stated that around 30 gigawatts of domestic polysilicon manufacturing capacity would be needed by 2030, with an estimated investment potential of ₹25,000 crore.

He emphasized that achieving this level of capacity would be beneficial for India's energy security and manufacturing resilience. The ministry has already introduced a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to support the production of polysilicon, wafers, cells, and modules. However, only a small portion of polysilicon is expected to be part of this initiative, as the major focus remains on solar modules and cells.

India currently boasts over 200GW of solar module manufacturing capacity and around 30GW of cell manufacturing. The government is also working on schemes for wafers and ingots, with polysilicon playing a vital role in the production process. Currently, China leads the solar manufacturing industry, and India is striving to reduce its import dependency across all components to achieve a target of 500GW non-fossil capacity, of which approximately 300GW will be solar.
