GFA expands GPL broadcast coverage to boost commercial value

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Mark Addo has disclosed that the association is actively expanding the broadcast and commercial reach of the Ghana Premier League. Speaking at the 32nd Ordinary Congress, Addo revealed that approximately 68 matches were broadcast live during the previous season, in addition to hundreds of delayed-game productions. This expansion highlights the increasing importance of television coverage in boosting the league's visibility and value.

Addo emphasized that broadcasting is a crucial part of the GFA's overall commercial strategy, especially in attracting sponsors and media partners to the league. He also mentioned that ongoing discussions are taking place regarding media rights and collaborations with other television stations, suggesting that the potential value of these efforts is substantial.

Contrary to those who might interpret the absence of a headline sponsor as a lack of commercial activity, Addo pointed to broadcasting and other commercial arrangements as areas where the GFA is already working to generate value for the clubs. Additionally, he announced a new financial package under which each Premier League club will receive GH¢1 million at the start of the season.

This move, he believes, when combined with increased television exposure and continued sponsorship efforts, can significantly strengthen the commercial foundation of the Ghana Premier League.

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is set to commence on September 5.
