Family cohesion key to adolescent well-being, DIFI says

Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) has emphasized the vital role that strong family bonds, emotional support, and open communication play in fostering adolescent well-being, particularly in the face of rapid social and technological changes. Family cohesion, according to DIFI, is a product of the quality of relationships, communication, mutual respect, emotional support, shared responsibilities, and participation in decision-making, rather than simply living together or spending time under one roof.

The institute's recent findings reveal that 97.13% of family members enjoy spending time together, 97.77% report that family members support one another, 95.01% express satisfaction with communication quality, and 98.89% feel a strong sense of belonging to their families. These figures underscore the importance of parents' presence and emotional support, with 57% of parents spending around 30 hours per week with their children and 71.56% of adolescents receiving emotional support from their fathers.

DIFI asserts that adolescent well-being encompasses psychological well-being, quality of life, family relationships, a sense of belonging, and confidence in shaping their future, emphasizing that academic achievement and material resources are not the sole determinants. It highlights that meaningful interactions, based on dialogue, emotional support, and mutual respect, are crucial for strengthening family relationships, rather than merely meeting material needs.

The institute urges parents to engage in open dialogue with their children, particularly adolescents, actively listen to their concerns, allocate time for meaningful family interactions away from distractions, provide emotional support through appreciation and active listening, participate in activities with their children, and include them in appropriate family decisions to nurture their confidence and sense of responsibility.

DIFI also warns against allowing electronic devices and social media to supplant direct family communication, rely on constant criticism, or dismiss children's feelings and opinions.

In response to these findings, DIFI recommends implementing guidance programs to help parents adopt positive parenting approaches, fostering stronger family bonds and promoting adolescent well-being amidst the challenges posed by modern life.
