Eight Ghanaian projects receive €2m to boost local medicines, vaccines production

Eight Ghanaian research and development projects have been awarded €2 million to enhance the local production of medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics through the Vax and Pharma-Ghana initiative. These collaborations between Ghanaian research institutions and pharmaceutical companies aim to bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial manufacturing, ultimately strengthening health security and pharmaceutical industrialization in Ghana.

The Minister of Health emphasized that scientific discoveries only realize their full value when they are developed, validated, manufactured at scale, and made accessible to those in need. Recent global health emergencies have highlighted the importance of local pharmaceutical production for national health security, not as isolation but as a strategic partnership.

At a "Research Meets Manufacturing" award ceremony, the grants were presented by the National Vaccine Institute and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The Ministry of Health urged the awardees to transform their research into products that meet regulatory standards and improve health outcomes. The grants were awarded based on technical merit, public benefit, local manufacturer participation, and sustainability beyond the project period.

The eight projects were selected from 43 proposals, and they will receive additional technical assistance, networking opportunities, and knowledge exchange to strengthen research capacity and support commercialization.
