Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, Meghan Markle reportedly sought a meeting with California Governor Gavin Newsom to explore the possibility of replacing Harris' seat. The report states that this meeting was publicly presented as an introductory interaction following the couple's move to California. However, a source close to the Sussexes has denied these claims, stating that no such meeting took place.

Newsom eventually appointed California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill Harris' vacated Senate seat in January 2021.
