'Deliberately targeted' — Russia hits residential building in Sumy as attacks across Ukraine kill at least 6, injure 77

Russian attacks in Ukraine claimed at least six lives and left 77 injured over the past 24 hours, according to local authorities on August 21. A significant overnight drone assault targeted a residential building in Sumy Oblast, injuring six people, including a 16-year-old girl. Governor Oleh Hryhorov confirmed that this strike was deliberately aimed at the building.

Earlier, Russian forces executed three targeted attacks on residential areas in Konotop, Sumy Oblast, utilizing high-speed jet-powered drones. Consequently, eight civilians suffered injuries across Sumy Oblast due to Russian strikes. According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia launched 135 drones against Ukraine, of which 107 were neutralized by air defenses.

The remaining 28 drones inflicted damage at 16 separate locations, with debris from intercepted drones falling at three additional sites. The attack was still in progress as of the Air Force's 8 a.m. update. In Donetsk Oblast, Russian attacks resulted in two deaths and 27 injuries, while Kharkiv Oblast saw two fatalities and nine injuries.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast reported one death and 10 injuries, and Kherson Oblast saw four injuries following FPV drone strikes. Earlier in the day, a Russian-guided aerial bomb killed a 46-year-old woman and injured a 53-year-old in Komyshuvakha, while another FPV drone strike on a vehicle carrying humanitarian aid wounded someone in Kushuhum.

These attacks come in the wake of a large-scale Russian assault on Kyiv, which resulted in at least 15 deaths and around 40 injuries, followed by a daytime drone strike that claimed two more lives and injured three. Kyiv is observing a day of mourning for the victims on August 21.
