Cowing returns punt for TD to spark the 49ers in 41-18 preseason win over the Chargers

In a preseason showdown, the San Francisco 49ers trounced the Los Angeles Chargers with a score of 41-18. Jacob Cowing sparked the victory with a remarkable 83-yard punt return touchdown. Quarterback Brock Purdy made his debut, completing 4 of 6 passes for 29 yards. The 49ers' defense, however, struggled against the Chargers, who dominated the game with eight punts, seven penalties, and eight first downs.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert also saw action for the first time in preseason, tossing a 9-yard pass to Charlie Kolar, but the drive ended in a 3-and-out. Cowing's speed and agility were on full display as he returned the punt 52 yards to reach the 49ers' 17-yard line, before racing into the end zone for the score. The 49ers responded with two field goals from Eddy Pineiro, putting them ahead 20-3 at halftime.

Sincere McCormick added a 7-yard touchdown run, and fourth-string running back Khalil Herbert scored on a 1-yard plunge. The Chargers finally broke through in the third quarter with a 28-yard touchdown catch from Jerand Bradley, with Evan Svoboda converting the ensuing 2-point conversion. The 49ers' backup quarterback, Adrian Martinez, intercepted a pass from Cowing, returning it 16 yards for a score.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones then entered the game and assisted in two more 49ers touchdowns: a 9-yard keeper and a 17-yard touchdown to Jordan Watkins. Rookie De Zhaun Stribling and KhaDarel Hodge were the top receivers for the 49ers with 4 catches each. Quarterback Trey Lance, a former 49ers draft pick, completed 10 of 16 passes for 73 yards.

Chargers left tackle Branson Taylor suffered a season-ending injury in the second quarter and did not return. The 49ers' next game will be an away matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders in the final preseason game. The Chargers will host the Los Angeles Rams, their co-tenant at SoFi Stadium, to wrap up the preseason.
