Ceuta begins burials for migrants who died attempting to cross into the Spanish territory

In Ceuta, Spain, the burial of four unidentified migrants who died attempting to cross from Morocco took place on Friday, August 21, 2026. The bodies were interred in cinderblock plots at a Muslim cemetery, with an Islamic cleric leading prayers and chants praising God. This is the first of many expected burials as over 90 migrants lost their lives during Spain's deadliest border crisis in recent weeks.

The migrants, driven by misinformation, poverty, and a lack of opportunities, flooded into Ceuta, a Spanish territory bordering Morocco. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights, a left-leaning NGO, has called for an immediate halt to burials until the identities of the deceased can be confirmed and their bodies repatriated to Morocco, their country of origin.

The NGO criticized the burials as a "new human tragedy" and a "disaster of displacement and missing persons." Most of the fatalities occurred either by drowning or a stampede to cross a breakwater barrier near a border checkpoint.
