Bangladesh Premier League 2026/27 Canceled

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the country's premier T20 competition, has been canceled for the 2026/27 season. This decision was made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as they prepare to revamp the troubled tournament. BCB President Tamim Iqbal announced the cancellation on Thursday, stating that several franchises had violated rules and regulations, and the board is currently grappling with unpaid dues and bank guarantee problems.

Over the past two years, the BCB has incurred losses amounting to approximately $3.3 million from the BPL. While the BPL remains a popular cricketing event, the board cannot continue hosting it at a loss, according to Tamim. He emphasized that the organization intends to host the BPL, but they aim to do so properly, which could take six to twelve months.

The BCB has already initiated talks with existing franchises and plans to finalize the franchise process by April or May of the following year. This extended timeline will enable the board to identify replacements if any franchises default. Tamim, who recently took on the role of chairman of the International Cricket Council’s new Franchise League Committee, highlighted the importance of restructuring the BPL, citing Bangladesh's previous experience with the tournament.

The BCB is also open to incorporating foreign franchises into the competition as part of their planned overhaul.
