At least 50 killed, mostly children, as overloaded boat capsizes in Nigeria

In a tragic incident in north-western Nigeria, at least 46 people lost their lives when a boat capsized in Sokoto state. The vessel reportedly carried over 70 passengers, primarily children, and a search operation is underway, according to police spokesperson Ahmad Rufai. Sixteen individuals have been rescued, while 15 are still missing.

The remote location of the incident, near Gorau in Gorony, has posed challenges for emergency services. A witness reported seeing 50 bodies, many wrapped in traditional cloths, being prepared for burial at a community mosque. Nigeria's emergency management agency spokesperson, Ezekiel Manzo, explained that the area is difficult to access and emphasized the common causes of boat accidents, such as overcrowding, poor maintenance, and inadequate safety measures.

Recent incidents include a boat overturning in Jigawa state last month and another capsizing in December 2024, resulting in multiple fatalities. Authorities have suggested implementing safer boats, life jackets, dredging waterways, and enhancing safety enforcement, but these recommendations have yet to be fully implemented. For many Nigerians, particularly in rural communities, rivers serve as vital transportation routes, as poor roads and limited bridges hinder land travel.
