AI Music Hit Nearly 40% of All New Releases

Recent research revealed that nearly 40% of music released in July 2026 was created using artificial intelligence. This finding sparked concerns about the honesty of nearly a third of creators who claimed they had not used AI in their songs. The data emerged a month after SubmitHub introduced its AI detection tool, SH Labs, which aimed to address the issue of disclosure, allowing listeners to know whether the music they were hearing was generated by AI.

Bandcamp, Traxsource, and other platforms began using SH Labs to analyze over a million songs, discovering that 23.2% were entirely AI-generated, with an additional 15.3% containing AI elements that had been modified by humans.

Notably, 31% of AI-generated songs were inaccurately labeled by their creators as non-AI created, highlighting a potential issue with transparency in the music industry. SubmitHub CEO Jason Grishkoff emphasized the importance of disclosure, stating that consumers should be empowered to decide whether they want to engage with AI-generated music. He added that the platform's role is to provide sufficient information for that decision.

In response to the growing concerns, several major industry organizations have announced plans to develop a voluntary AI badging system to help listeners understand how songs were created.
