‘4.3m JHS, 9.5m primary textbooks’ – Opoku Mensah tells Education spokesperson to check records

Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum's spokesperson, Yaw Opoku Mensah, has called on the Education Minister's spokesperson to verify the facts he claimed during a recent appearance on Joy Prime. Opoku Mensah stated that the assertions about no textbooks being developed or provided for the new curriculum were misleading and could be confirmed through official records from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

He mentioned that official records show that 4,363,484 core-subject textbooks have been procured and distributed to Junior High Schools throughout the country, while an additional 9,559,367 core textbooks were provided to primary schools nationwide to support teaching and learning. Opoku Mensah questioned how the Education Ministry's official spokesperson could make a public claim that, in his view, contradicts the records available within the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service.

He emphasized that political communication should never be a license to rewrite facts or mislead the public, urging the spokesperson to prepare adequately for public engagements, verify information, and consult official records before making statements about matters concerning the Education Ministry. Opoku Mensah also highlighted the importance of Ghana having informed public discourse and not misinformation presented as official information. He encouraged public officials to ensure their statements are supported by verifiable facts.
