2027: Police reads riot act to political parties ahead of campaigns in Taraba

The Taraba State Police Command has issued a stern warning to political parties, candidates, and their supporters in the lead-up to electioneering campaigns in the state. During a stakeholders’ meeting held at the command headquarters in Jalingo, the police emphasized their commitment to ensuring a peaceful, violence-free electoral process.

Chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Didango, the meeting aimed to prevent electoral offences such as violence, intimidation, hate speech, destruction of campaign materials, and possession of dangerous weapons. The police reiterated that political parties and candidates have the right to campaign, but this right must be exercised responsibly, without infringing on the rights, safety, and freedoms of others.

Didango urged political actors to caution their supporters against provocative statements and actions that could disrupt public peace. He also called for support from traditional and religious leaders, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders in maintaining peace before, during, and after the elections. The command urged all residents of Taraba State to abide by the rules, avoid violence, and work together to ensure a credible and orderly electoral process.
