₹1,750 crore ADB assistance for development of 500 Karnataka Public Schools

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged ₹1,750 crore towards the development of 500 government schools in Karnataka, known as Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). The initiative, valued at ₹2,500 crore, will be funded by the ADB contributing ₹1,750 crore and the state government adding ₹750 crore. Implemented over four years until 2029-30, the agreement was sealed between Karnataka, the ADB, and the state's education officials.

The chosen schools, exhibiting potential to attract large student populations, boast grade coverage, ample enrolment, available land, and adequate infrastructure. Each school is expected to house a minimum of 1,200 students. Prior to the integration of schools, clusters have been identified, and nearby sub-scale schools within a 3-5 km radius mapped for possible consolidation.

Out of the 100 detailed project reports prepared, the focus will be on civil works and infrastructure development, classroom furniture, laboratory equipment, IT infrastructure, and other facilities. Recurring expenses will encompass teacher salaries, non-teaching staff, transport, administration, utilities, maintenance, and operational requirements.
