The 6th Annual Maritime Writes Project Creative Writing Bootcamp has urged writers to promote Nigeria's maritime and port sector as an inclusive industry. Port Manager of the Lagos Ports Complex, Mr. Debo Lawal, highlighted the growing participation of women in traditionally male-dominated maritime roles during the bootcamp's opening in Apapa Port, Lagos.
Lawal emphasized that the maritime sector offers opportunities for women and should be portrayed as an inclusive industry. The bootcamp, themed 'Voyages Through Chokepoints: Power, Passage and Life at Sea', brought together young writers, maritime stakeholders, academics, and mentors. The Project Coordinator, Ezinne Azunna, explained that the initiative aims to bridge creative writing and maritime awareness by exposing participants to the realities of the sector.
One of the project alumni, Uche Ohiaeri, shared how her participation in the programme in 2022 transformed her confidence and broadened her interests beyond creative writing.
