Wetang’ula sounds alarm over political goonism: politics must never divide us

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has sounded an alarm over the growing issue of political goonism as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election. Speaking during a condolence visit to Senator Boni Khalwale’s family in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, following the death of his wife, Mama Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale, Wetang'ula called on politicians and young people to reject violence and promote issue-based campaigns.

He emphasized the importance of remaining peaceful, stating that politics must never divide Kenyans, who are all brothers and sisters. Wetang'ula warned that the rise of political goonism poses a threat to Kenya’s peace and undermines citizens' right to participate freely in politics. He urged political leaders to compete through ideas, policies, and development records rather than mobilizing violence against their opponents.

The warning was echoed by other leaders, including Ikolomani MP Innocent Mugabe, Kakamega County MP Elsie Muhanda, and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who all called for political tolerance and urged residents to maintain peace during the burial of Mama Gloria, regardless of the attendees' political affiliations.
