Walmart strong again in second quarter, but its outlook is reserved

Walmart reported robust performance in the second quarter, though its outlook for the year is more subdued. Shares fell 6% at the opening bell. Comparable sales in U.S. stores and online, which include stores open for at least a year and those tied to online sales, rose by 2.6%, continuing a 4.1% increase from the previous quarter.

However, excluding the wellness category, which encompasses Walmart's pharmacies, comparable sales rose by 3.4%. Federal legislation requiring pharmacies to cap prices for certain high-cost Medicare drugs impacted these sales. Walmart's online sales in the U.S. increased by 24%, marking a decline from 26% growth in the first quarter.

The retailer joins other major companies in reporting second-quarter results, potentially providing insights into whether the ongoing price pressures from the Iran conflict have influenced consumer behavior. Walmart boasts over 150 million weekly customers, making it a key barometer of consumer spending. With the U.S. data released on Friday showing weak retail sales in July and a new reading of consumer pessimism due to rising costs for gas, groceries, and other essentials, Walmart's growing customer base and its ability to attract wealthier Americans have further heightened its significance. The majority of Walmart's market share growth is from households earning over $100,000 annually.
