Valleyview IGA reopens in west Edmonton’s Parkview neighbourhood

The Valleyview IGA grocery store has reopened in the Parkview neighbourhood of west Edmonton, located on 142 Street at 91 Avenue. Former IGA store manager Stuart Trenchard reported a high level of interest from customers eager to see the return of the familiar brand following two months of construction. University of Alberta retailing director John Pracejus noted that the return of the IGA banner is likely to attract shoppers who remember the store's long history and may be more inclined to return to the neighbourhood.

Trenchard, with decades of experience in the grocery business, shared that the nostalgia tied to the IGA brand, commonly seen in smaller communities, resonates with many customers. He expressed that having a local grocery store is valuable to residents, as they can now shop within walking distance rather than driving for 10 or 15 minutes.

The new IGA will replace the short-lived artisan grocer L'OCA Quality Market, which closed in March 2025 after operating in the same space since January. Several former L'OCA employees have joined the new IGA, which has hired around 45-50 individuals. City councillor Thu Parmar emphasized that the hiring of local residents contributes to the community by providing employment opportunities.

Prior to L'OCA, the location was occupied by Andy's IGA, which operated for nearly 60 years before owner Andy Taschuk retired in 2024. Taschuk expressed that his commitment to the store and the community meant a great deal to him and his family. He praised the community for their appreciation of independent grocers, stating that he hopes the new IGA will thrive and continue its tradition of supporting the neighbourhood for another 59 years. The store will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
