Sugarcane farmers demand electoral reforms as Kenya Sugar Board polls enter high-stakes phase

Kenya's sugarcane farmers are pushing for electoral reforms ahead of the upcoming Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) elections slated for September 5, 2026. They are demanding changes to the electoral process and more time to review the voters' register before the polls. The farmers' petition, presented to the KSB election board on Wednesday, challenges the two-week notice given for the elections as insufficient.

Led by farmers' lawyer Joseph Makokha and several others, the farmers argue that this short notice makes it difficult for them to verify the voters' register, assess candidates, and prepare adequately for the polls. They are demanding that the voters' register be displayed prominently at every polling station ahead of election day to ensure transparency and prevent disputes.

The farmers believe this would give eligible growers an opportunity to confirm their details before the vote, improving transparency and preventing any potential issues. The election has become a critical contest in Kenya's sugar industry, dealing with financial challenges, delayed payments, low productivity, and concerns over local mills' efficiency.

The Ministry of Agriculture has shortlisted candidates for five grower-representative positions covering different sugar catchment areas. Campaigns have already gained momentum, with candidates taking their messages to cane-growing communities and focusing on better returns, timely payments, and reforms within the sugar value chain.

The election's outcome will have a significant impact on growers, millers, and other players across the sugar value chain.
