Spacewalk Preps Continue to Finish Antenna Installation Job Next Week

Astronauts Anil Menon and Sophie Adenot from NASA and ESA respectively are set to conduct a spacewalk on Aug. 25 to complete the installation of a space-to-ground antenna on the International Space Station. They began their tasks on Aug. 18. Menon will use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to retrieve a spare antenna from an external platform, which Adenot will then attach to the Z1 truss segment above the Unity module.

Once installed, they will make necessary electrical and data connections to enable high-speed transmissions with mission control. If time allows, they will also attempt to replace a retroreflector on the forward port of the Harmony module to enhance navigation data for visiting spacecraft. The spacewalk is expected to begin around 8:35 a.m. EDT and last about six and a half hours.

A fourth spacewalk is planned for Sept. 1 if the retroreflector replacement task is not completed by Aug. 25. The astronauts will be assisted by Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, both NASA astronauts, during the procedure review and spacewalk.
