Sharjah deploys AI cameras on buses, taxis to boost passenger safety

Sharjah is enhancing public transport safety by installing artificial intelligence (AI) cameras on intercity buses and taxis. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) said the smart surveillance cameras inside and outside the vehicles will monitor road conditions, passenger movements, and driver behavior. Each intercity bus is equipped with 10 AI-powered cameras, while taxis have been fitted with five smart cameras.

These cameras can detect objects and pedestrians, monitor side overtaking, analyze driver behavior, count passengers, and identify accidents or lost property. They also send real-time alerts to authorities for quicker incident responses. Yousif Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said the initiative aligns with the goals of the Year of the Family by creating a safer and more reliable transportation environment that improves quality of life and family stability.

Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, highlighted the smart camera system as a significant step in strengthening operational monitoring and improving response times to incidents. The AI technologies are seen as a crucial component in developing advanced transport services, providing safer and more comfortable journeys for passengers and drivers.

The initiative is part of SRTA's strategy to adopt smart solutions, improve the efficiency and quality of the transport network, and maintain Sharjah's status as a leading provider of safe, smart, and sustainable mobility services.
