Shakahola massacre: Kilifi leaders step up campaign against extremist beliefs

In Kilifi, religious leaders, elders and youth representatives have called for stronger community efforts to combat extremist beliefs and foster peaceful coexistence. The campaign, which includes elders, religious leaders, youth and community organizations, aims to encourage open dialogue and empower young people to make informed decisions about the leaders and teachings they follow.

Kaya Elder Emmanuel Chengo emphasized the importance of evaluating leaders based on their ability to provide tangible solutions to daily problems, rather than mere promises or influence.

The initiative highlights the need to address the growing concern over radicalisation in Kilifi, which is driven by factors such as religious misinformation, unemployment and online spaces. The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) in Kilifi has played a crucial role in improving interfaith relations by bringing together different religious communities. IRCK Chair Amos Lewa highlighted the group's efforts to unite various religions and work alongside other leaders.

The Shakahola massacre, which resulted in hundreds of deaths after followers of a religious cult adhered to its teachings, has led to increased scrutiny of religious organizations and a focus on protecting vulnerable individuals. The Senate inquiry into the tragedy recommended measures to prevent extreme indoctrination, radicalization and exploitation.

The National Counter Terrorism Centre has also launched an awareness campaign in Shakahola to enhance community understanding of radicalization and cooperation with security agencies.
