Sennheiser just made earbuds you don’t have to throw away when the battery dies

Sennheiser's new Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds bring flagship sound, Dolby Atmos, and a user-replaceable battery you can swap yourself.

Sennheiser just made earbuds you don’t have to throw away when the battery dies

Sennheiser has unveiled the Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds, merging the finest elements of their larger Momentum 5 Wireless headphones into a more compact design. These earbuds will go on sale on September 3rd for $299.95. They utilize Sennheiser's 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducer, made and tested at their facility in Tullamore, Ireland.

The earbuds support Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX Adaptive, providing high-resolution audio up to 24-bit and 96kHz, including aptX Lossless for bit-perfect playback. The updated noise cancellation system features a redesigned ear tip combined with a four-microphone array for adaptive hybrid ANC, automatic anti-wind mode, and a transparent mode touted as the most natural yet.

Dolby Atmos with head tracking enables spatial audio. For calls, six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers, guided by an AI speech-extraction algorithm, help isolate speech in noisy environments. The housing boasts an improved design, rated IP54 for dust, sweat, and splash resistance. Battery life provides 12 hours of continuous playback, with the case offering two extra charges, amounting to up to 40 hours overall.

A quick charge adds an hour of playback. The standout innovation, however, lies in the replaceable batteries. Both the earbuds and the wireless case have user-replaceable batteries, allowing users to swap out the cells themselves using a screwdriver, rather than discarding the entire earbud unit when the battery degrades. While not the first to offer this feature, Sennheiser is one of the first mainstream brands to do so, potentially prompting others to follow suit.

The earbuds will be available in five colors: Graphite, Cream, Copper, Denim, and Lavender. They'll be sold directly from sennheiser-hearing.com and through select retailers.
