Schools to Reopen Monday as Education Ministry Rejects Delay Claims

Nairobi, Kenya – August 20, 2023 – All schools in Kenya are scheduled to resume their classes on Monday, according to the Ministry of Education. The Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, has firmly stated that there has been no alteration to the established academic schedule for primary schools and teacher training colleges. In a statement, Ogamba clarified, "We wish to clarify that the academic calendar for Basic Education institutions and Teacher Training Colleges remains unchanged."

Ogamba pointed out the proliferation of false information on social media platforms claiming a shift in the reopening date. He emphasized that these claims were unfounded, stating, "Our attention has been drawn to misleading information circulating on various social media platforms, purporting that the academic calendar for basic education institutions and Teachers Training Colleges has been changed."

He urged all stakeholders—parents, learners, and educators—to disregard these unauthorized notices and to rely solely on official communications issued by the Ministry.

To ensure adherence to the approved academic calendar, regional and county-level education officials, including Directors of Education and Sub-County Directors, have been directed to actively enforce compliance with the official schedule.
