Russia Poses a Threat Even to Neutral Countries — Wadephul

Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that Russia and other hostile actors pose a threat to neutral countries, not just through direct military actions but also through hybrid threats. Speaking at a conference in Bern, Wadephul stated that modern security cannot be reduced to conventional military threats alone, as countries are also vulnerable wherever their basic supply of populations is at risk and where Russia acts against their interests through hybrid means.

He highlighted the Alpine region as strategically important due to its critical supply routes for energy, transportation, and data, likening Europe to the Strait of Hormuz. Wadephul emphasized that neutrality alone is not a guarantee of peaceful existence, as demonstrated by recent cyberattacks against Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

He acknowledged that Swiss neutrality has played an important role in international diplomacy but argued that neutrality should not be based on weakness. Wadephul stressed that Switzerland should take responsibility for its economic and political relationships, calling for Germany to increase its defense spending and strengthen its own defense capabilities and those of NATO.

The European NATO allies and Canada have agreed to provide Ukraine with at least €70 billion in military assistance in the coming year. Wadephul called on European countries, including Switzerland, to take a clear position in support of Ukraine and emphasized that the European Union remains united in confronting Russia's imperialist policies.
