Royals stage another comeback to take the series from the Athletics

The Kansas City Royals staged another comeback to claim the series from the Athletics on August 19, 2026. The Athletics had the worst bullpen ERA in 2026, allowing Kansas City to overcome a deficit. The Royals took the game 9-7, setting the stage for a possible four-game sweep. Starting pitcher Seth Lugo gave up three consecutive hard-hit ground balls in the first inning, leading to a 2-0 deficit for the Athletics.

Despite multiple opportunities, the Royals failed to capitalize on walks and an awkward pitch from Jeffrey Springs. Vinnie Pasquantino's leadoff single in the 4th inning set the tone for their first score, making the score 2-1. Henry Bolte drove in three consecutive runs in the 5th inning, stretching the lead to 5-2. In the 6th inning, the Royals scored five runs to narrow the gap to 5-2.

The Athletics brought in Scott Blewett, allowing another single to Tolbert and another opportunity for the Royals with runners in scoring position.
