Romanian F-16 Destroys Explosives-Laden Marine Drone Near Black Sea Gas Project

A Romanian F-16 fighter aircraft destroyed an explosives-laden marine drone near the strategic Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea on Thursday, Aug. 20. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta asserted the unmanned marine vessel was carrying explosives and did not originate from Ukraine. Romanian President Nicusor Dan strongly condemned the incident, blaming Russia for escalating dangerous tensions.

The drone was identified by a commercial vessel at 6:28 a.m. local time, situated several hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project and about 80 nautical miles east of Constanta, Romania's major port city. Two Romanian F-16s were dispatched to intercept the threat, with one fighter subsequently destroying the drone. This incident comes amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, which has been pushing military threats deeper into NATO's eastern flank.

Romania has reported numerous drone incursions and crashes near its territory in recent months, with NATO aircraft shooting down four aerial drones over Romanian soil. The latest drone crash occurred in an unpopulated area near the Ukrainian border, resulting in no casualties. The recent events follow Russian aerial assaults that killed at least 16 people in Kyiv and surrounding regions overnight.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the international community to address Moscow's escalating attacks, warning that Russia's war is increasingly threatening security beyond Ukraine's borders.
