Real Madrid's summer signing Denzel Dumfries is expected to start in their La Liga opener against Espanyol, according to Mario Cortegana of the Athletic. The 30-year-old, who was released by Inter Milan for €20 million, could line up alongside the club's established right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Dumfries brings a versatile skill set to the position, capable of operating as both a traditional right-back and wing-back.
This flexibility allows coach Jose Mourinho to adapt his tactics depending on the opponent and match situation. While Mourinho may favor Trent's technical abilities, Dumfries' athleticism, defensive intensity and attacking prowess could make him the preferred choice in certain games. The upcoming match against Espanyol will likely provide the first indication of Mourinho's plans for the right-back position and how he intends to use Dumfries in the team.
