Real Madrid boss Mourinho wants to unlock key defender’s full potential; has a surprise new role planned

Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid boss, aims to unleash the full potential of key defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and has a surprising new role in mind for the Englishman. According to The Athletic's Mario Cortegana, Mourinho and his coaching staff see Alexander-Arnold as a highly adaptable player who can excel beyond his traditional right-back position.

The English international is set to be a regular starter under Mourinho but the Portuguese manager is also interested in exploring whether he can utilize Trent in central areas. Mourinho believes Alexander-Arnold's vision and passing range could provide his team with additional avenues for creating scoring opportunities for his attackers.

While the idea of a midfield experiment is not expected to become the club's primary tactical plan, Mourinho firmly believes in Trent's ability to operate from right-back and transition into midfield during specific phases of play. This would enable him to create an extra player in central areas while still initiating attacks from his natural defensive role.

Mourinho sees Alexander-Arnold as a critical component of his Real Madrid project, with the potential to become one of his most intriguing tactical assets this season.
