Qld government accused of gagging frontline organisations from speaking out

Queensland's opposition claims that frontline community organisations are being silenced due to fear of losing state funding. Premier David Crisafulli denied that there have been threats to cut investment in services like homelessness and child safety. One provider, speaking anonymously to the ABC, alleged that the LNP government is effectively silencing vulnerable voices by preventing experts from speaking freely.

They claimed there was a reluctance to speak out, leading to vital issues not being aired. It was suggested that funding isn't being awarded on merit but to those deemed compliant. One expert was told, "you are a service delivery provider, not an activist." Another anonymous provider said agencies are becoming cautious, fearing being labeled as agitators.

They noted that while they have been funded under various governments, the current LNP government's reaction is new and concerning. Shadow housing minister Meaghan Scanlon compared the Queensland government to the US administration under Trump, stating that criticizing the government leads to threats of cutting funding. Premier Crisafulli denied any threats against community organisations, claiming record investment had been made with a focus on accountability.

Opposition leader Steven Miles stated that numerous frontline organizations have expressed similar concerns over the 18 months of the LNP government, alleging that they are too scared to speak out publicly due to government threats. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie stated he was unaware of the allegations, emphasizing the administration's high standards.

Child Safety Minister Amanda Camm also refuted the allegations, stating none had been presented to her.
